Dadaphonic/Cranes News Update, February 22, 2002

22nd February 2002 — Dadaphonic/Cranes News Update, February 22, 2002

Well, Future Songs came out in America a few weeks ago. We want to say a really big thank you to all the college stations who have been playing us ! We did some interviews with some of them last week too and everybody was really nice ! Anyway, the album got to number 7 on the CMJ top 200 playlist ! Blimey ! We hadn't expected that. It's really nice to know that some people have been getting to hear it.

We are just starting to get some dates through for the cranes tour in America and Canada. It is going to start in Washington DC on April 24 and end in Florida on May 26. All the tour dates will be included here as soon as possible and we are so excited about it . Really hope you can come ! If you didn't already join the dadaphonic mailing list it can be found the 'About' section above cos then we can send you all the tour dates and other stuff when we have it. Thanks for joining.

If you wanted to hear the US version of Future songs (which we havent got yet here) they have it at Amazon or apparently it's on at listening posts at Tower Records this week or of course, if you wanted the original European version of the album then it is in our releases section or shop. Lyric books and other stuff can be also be found there too.

We're also going to have a new section on the site soon for some interviews and reviews and things but just for now here are a few press quotes that we received so far about the album..We'll let you know the tour dates as soon as they are ready.

Bye for now

Love from all at dadaphonic

Upon placing the new Cranes disc in your CD player, don't simply press the play button. Instead, go directly to track seven. The appropriately titled "Fragile" is true beauty, with angst free guitar, celestial atmospherics, and tender, dub inflected percussion forming the lush foundation over which singer Alison Shaw soothes by repeating the one word title over and over again. Once "Fragile" has embedded itself into your subconscious, investigate other delicate tracks like the lyrically empowering, musically arty "Sunrise," the captivating "Don't Wake Me Up," and the hopeful "Maker of Heavenly Trousers." FYI : The US version of Future Songs includes three bonus tracks : "In the Reeds" and remixes of "Fragile " and "Don't Wake Me Up"--MP.. Billboard Jan 26 2002

Time Out:

Cranes draw attention once again to the pale and interesting face of alternative rock. The chill of Alison Shaw’s breathy voice freezes any threat of leaden self-consciousness and brings a crystal sense of direction to the bands work, which saw them adopting decidedly modernist dance- based rhythms on their last (current) LP ‘Future Songs’. Ever enthralling.

Hot Tickets (London Evening Standard)

Ali Shaw’s smoked out vocal and the clever beat patterns of the worker cranes keep imminent album ‘Future Songs’ on the right track. White noise and intense melodies abound, so if you like Spiritualised and the dark dance movement, this could be worth hoisting up to...

London Evening Standard :

Three years after the demise of their former label Dedicated, the Cranes return with a new album and fresh sound. Future Songs sees them break away from their trademark industrial guitars, replacing them with delicate melodies that are just as hypnotic but offer more depth. Centre stage as ever is Alison Shaw, with her baby-doll voice. This is pop done with a very stately grace. Cranes’ future looks very rosy indeed .

Independent on Sunday :

Summery Art-Rock ......Future Songs is unlike any other cranes album. It's light, open, shimmering and dare I say it....summery !....

Uncut (Music and Film monthly magazine)

Cranes continue to make cinematic soundscapes interrupted by bursts of off -white noise decorated by Ali Shaw’s voice of taut tinsel. Almost defiant murmerings about new horizons adorn their sweetly honed drones.......- a subtler haunting, loungy, cinematic, pulsating, beautiful , beautiful sound....

Majestic music for the movie in your mind.

Probe Music

Keeping things mellow and chillin’ this little gem has it all between the strings and the soft femme vocals as the gentle breakbeats prod parts of your heart. Perfect for hangovers....

Buzz :

After what seems like an age, the cranes return refreshed with a delicious collection that should win your heart as well as your head. In Alison Shaw the band have a singer that possesses a unique voice. Breathy and childlike it often belies the sometimes dark nature of the songs. And with the lyrics fragmented and the music having the air of detachment and otherworldliness, the band are inhabiting the same grainy smoky world as Portishead and Mojave 3. Title track 'Future Song' is classic Cranes with Shaws voice dreamily floating above an almost cinematic sounding backdrop of gentle guitars, strings and scratchy rhythms.
