Return of the Shaw siblings' reveries
Portsmouth's most ethereal return after some years' absence with more of the same, frankly. Cranes haven't suddenly gone rap or garage, thank God, but continue to create cinematic soundscapes, interrupted by bursts of off-white noise, decorated by Ali Shaw's voice of taut tinsel. Almost defiant murmurings about new horizons adorn their sweetly honed drones. Converts will bliss out, others will remain infuriated. "Driving In The Sun" stumbles on a pretty tune, "Fragile" bursts into a minute of chaos (wherin you can just about hear a tape of this writer interviewing them a decade ago), and "The Maker of Heavenly Trousers" proves they do have a sense of humour. Majestic music for the movie in your mind.
