Cranes se forme à Portsmouth, en Angleterre, avec les frère et sœur Jim et Alison Shaw en 1986, combinant des talents multi-instrumentaux et une voix enfantine. Le duo développe un son unique autour d'influences telles que Cocteau Twins ou Dead Can Dance. Par la suite, la famille Shaw accueille deux guitaristes et signent sur le label indé Dedicated, d'où les maxis annoncent leur premier album en 1991, « wings of joy ». Le succès dans les charts est indéniable et The Cure invite le groupe sur sa tournée mondiale de 100 dates.
La tournée avec les Cure se ressent sur l'album « forever « qui sort en 1993 et qui prend la même direction musicale que la bande de Robert Smith. Puis sort l'album « loved » en 1994 ainsi qu'un disque parlé, « la tragédie d'Orestre et Electre » où Alison lit des extraits de la pièce de Jean-Paul Sartre, « les mouches » accompagné de la musique de Jim Shaw. L'album studio suivant, « population four », continue sur le thème des douces mélodies et de la voix de petite fille perdue de Alison Shaw, mais les guitares sont beaucoup plus présentes.
Après avoir quitté Dedicated/BMG en 1997, Cranes s'accorde un break et le groupe se reforme en 2000 avec un nouveau batteur, Jon Callender, et un nouveau guitariste, Paul Smith, pour enregistrer ce nouvel album, « future songs », plus expérimental et très atmosphérique, à sortir le 8 novembre prochain chez M10. Une véritable merveille...

Cranes were formed in Portsmouth, England, by brother and sister Jim and Alison Shaw in 1986, combining their multi-instrumental talents and a childlike voice. The duo developed a unique sound based on influences such as the Cocteau Twins and Dead can Dance. Following this, they recruited two guitarists and signed to the indie label Dedicated, putting out some 12"s leading to their debut album "Wings of Joy" in 1991. After undeniable chart success, the Cure invited the group on their 100 date world tour.
The influence of the Cure tour was felt on the 1993 album "Forever" which took a similar musical direction to Robert Smith's band. Then "Loved" was released in 1994 and a spoken word album "La Tragedie d'Oreste et Electre" in which Alison read extracts from Jean-Paul Sartre's play "Les Mouches" [The Flies] accompanied by Jim's music. The next studio album, "Population 4" continued the themes of sweet melodies and the little-girl-lost voice of Alison Shaw, although the guitar element was much more in evidence.
After leaving Dedicated/BMG in 1997, Cranes took a break and the group got back together in 2000 with a new drummer, Jon Callender, and a new gutarist, Paul Smith, to record this new album "Future Songs". More experimental and very atmospheric it comes out on 8th November on M10 [label]. It is truly marvellous.
