Population 4 marks a step backward for the Cranes, as the band gets more involved in soundscapes and less interested in songs. While their shimmering waves of distorted guitars and airy vocals still sound good, the group's sound is no longer fresh, and they have chosen not to develop it any further -- the Cranes sound nearly identical to how they did on their second album. Furthermore, their songwriting has hit has stalled. Not only do they have no new styles or structures, but they have failed to come up with the trancy hooks that propelled their first three albums, making Population 4 an outright failure.
