September 2001, RUMORE, issue 116
RUMORE: Alison, the first impression we got listening to “Future Songs” is a different formal approach. Why this choice?
Ali: I think we were searching for atmospheres that could be suitable to us in this period. A lot of things are changed in our lives during all these years, and I think “FS” can reflect them in the right way.
RUMORE: Your attitude to experimenting different sounds in an intimistic way is not changed, anyway…Is it correct to say that the new album is “noisy” in its ambiental and acoustic procedure?
Ali: Of course, FS doesn’t disown the Cranes identity, because, also in this case, we didn’t give up experimenting. It’s simply totally different from all the things we did before…It’s the beginning of a new cycle, for the all of us.
RUMORE: But do you think that songs like “Eight” or ”Everything For” represent a symbolic link between past and future?
Ali: Yes, indeed. It was Jim who created “Eight”, but you can consider it more as a sign of a link to the past than a proper song…we made it placing a bunch of old songs on it, playing them at a maximum volume. In the same way, “Everything For” was included just for a sound affinity. I think the songs that better represent us right now are episodes such as “Even When” or “The Maker Of Heavenly Trousers”.
