Après quatre ans d'absence, on ne croyait plus à leur retour. Pourtant, accompagnés de deux nouveaux membres, Ali (chant, guitare, basse) et Jim Shaw (guitare, batterie, programmation) sortent de l'ombre. Et placent leur nouvel album, Future Songs, sous le signe de l'expérimentation.
Ouirock: Où étiez-vous passés depuis 1997 ?
Ali: En 1997, on sortait d'un contrat assez long avec BMG et d'une période d'activité intense. Pendant la première année, en vérité, nous n'avons pas fait grand chose. On voulait juste vivre une vie qui ne soit pas centrée sur la musique. Jim s'est mis à produire les autres et j'ai pris des cours de comédie pendant deux ans à Londres. J'avais commencé ces études comme un projet d'enrichissement personnel, mais j'y ai pris très vite goût. C'était génial de changer complètement d'habitudes.
Jim: Je n'ai jamais dit cela, mais j'avais vraiment l'impression qu'une force la poussait. Je l'admirais d'aller à l'autre bout de Londres, de rentrer tard le soir pour étudier. J'ai un studio dans ma chambre, alors pendant ce temps-lè, j'enregistrais des trucs. Je peux même bosser depuis mon lit... J'étais un peu assommé par les sept années précédentes, par tout ce qui nous était arrivé. Se retrouver sans aucun plan du jour au lendemain était étrange. Il nous a fallu un an pour savoir quoi faire, pour nous ajuster.
Ouirock: Vous avez deux nouveaux membres è bord. Vous collaborez étroitement avec eux dans l'écriture ?
Ali: L'apport de John (Callender), notre nouveau batteur, a été crucial pour cet album. On travaille vraiment en tant que groupe, même si l'écriture revient è Jim et moi. L'aspect live est vital pour nous. Nous ne pourrions pas engager n'importe quel musicien. C'est une autre raison pour laquelle nous avons cessé de jouer, car Marc avait quitté le groupe, pour se marier et vivre è Oslo. On s'est sentis sans groupe. Jim et moi avons continué è vaguement écrire en 1998, mais rien ne tombait en place jusqu'è l'arrivée de John l'année suivante. On est alors redevenus une unité.
Ouirock: Et vous vous êtes orientés vers un style plus expérimental...
Ali: Nous avons mis du temps avant de trouver la direction dans laquelle aller. On a essayé de tout bousculer, de trouver en nous des choses que nous n'avions pas déjè faites. On aime la musique expérimentale, même plus extrême que la nôtre.

After four years of absence, we didn't think they'd be back. Now with two new members, Ali (vocals, guitar, bass) and Jim Shaw (guitar, drums, programming) have come out of the shadows, and distinguish their new album, Future Songs, as experimental.
Ouirock: Where have you been since 1997?
Ali: In 1997, we'd come out of a fairly long contract with BMG, and a period of intense (musical) activity. In all truth, we did not do much during the first year. We just wanted to live a life that was not centered around music. Jim began producing the work of others, and I had enrolled in comedy courses in London, for two years. I began these studies for my own personal enrichment, but I soon took a great liking to it. It was a great experience to completely change direction.
Jim: I never said this, but I really had the impression that she was moved by a certain force. I admired her as she went from one end of London, to come home late in the evening to study. I have a studio in my room, so during this time I recorded some things. I can even work right from my bed. . . I was a little overcome by the seven previous years, by everything that happened to us. It was strange to suddenly find yourself with no plans the next day. We needed a year to adjust, to decide what to do.
Ouirock: You've got two new members on board. Do you all collaborate closely during the songwriting process?
Ali: The arrival of John (Callender), our new drummer, was crucial for this album. We really do work together as a group, even if the writing comes down to Jim and I. We consider the live aspect vital; we can't just work with any musician. It's another reason why we ceased to play, cos Marc left the group to get married and live in Oslo. We felt disunified. In 1998, Jim and I continued to write vaguely, but nothing fell in to place until John's arrival the following year. Thus, we reformed as a unit.
Ouirock: And you leaned towards a more experimental style. . .
Ali: We took some time before deciding which direction to follow. We decided to subvert everything, to find within ourselves things that we haven't yet done. We love experimental music, even that which is more experimental than ours.
