Thank you Cranes. Saw the gig on Saturday night and it's by far the best I've ever seen them (seen them 5 times before) . Out of this world! It seems that they now have a big enough back catalogue to vary the set-list as the mood of the gig dictates. Alison is getting more and more confident - if anything she was even better than at the Portsmouth show last Autumn. Three (?) new songs were aired -all three being different to the new ones played last time out. One of these had a haunting repetitive piano refrain similar to the 'Wings Of joy' stuff and was excellent - another seemed to lean towards Portishead territory (no bad thing) and was good as well. Of the oldies 'Lilies', 'Paris and Rome' and (of course) 'Adoration' stood out. Sorry I haven't got a full set-list but I can't remember, it just all seems like a golden haze now. Before this gig I always thought of music as taking basic building blocks and putting them together to make something beautiful. This gig was beauty synthesised into music.
Jim, Alison et al - Thanks!

Difficult to know how to describe this, my first Cranes gig. There was a good crowd there. The garage is not a huge venue, but it was full. Lyric books were on sale, I was tempted to buy one, too see if had a new date for the next album. There were a few songs I didn't recognise, but I don't know if they were new or not. They were good. I have had a tendency to go off bands after seeing them live, I am glad this didn't happen. I was not completely blown away to start with, but I was defiantly left wanting more by the time the show was over.

To those who might care for it: the Cranes' show this past weekend was fantastic (and that's heavily underrating it), and the songs to be included in the next album are so lovely. Totally distinct from the 'Population Four' style, so that should please many that didn't really dig it. The songs go more along the 'Wings of Joy' lines, though they can be as melodic at points as those in 'Loved'. Really something to look forward to. Jim said they're carefully working on the new album, so they can get it all right. The performance was marvelous, and the venue so small it was like a private show - no more than around 200 persons! Plus, in my house I have my TV set further away than Allison was from me! If I stretched my arm I would be holding her microphone. Literally, my upper half was leaning against resting over the stage. They played so well, but so loose at the same time, it was intense. Entrancing really. Ali was singing so well, such depth and passion, with the band corresponding with such precision... it was memorable.
And they're *so* nice, but *so* nice, it's unspeakable. Jim, Ali, Paul, Mark... unbeatable. Got Allison's handwritten setlist; Jim going on Robin Guthrie, talking and laughing, being *so* amazingly relaxed and friendly and communicative and happy; Matt Cope was there backstage and I hadn't noticed it, so Jim tells me "you want to have something really *really* rare? Matt is right there, (and since he's not in the band anymore) ask him to sign your albums..."; so he comes over, carefully gets the sleeves, draws one of his characteristic symbols, and then tells me: "you know when was the last time I signed like this...? some 6 years ago...", and then he went on how he felt like while he was in the band, how it's like now, how it was to have played with Robert (Smith, The Cure), even demonstrating on me how it is when Robert's drunk... :) Ali so attentive, coming over especially to talk, and so lovely; and Paul too so very amicable, before, during and after the show, giving me his guitar pick, along with his email address (!) written on a subway pamphlet. :)
Perfect, just perfect. They even *thanked* for having gone to the show. Since when a phenomenal band like that thanks their fans that way, with such spontaneity and humbleness... and *undoes* their own gear....?
They're fabulous; simply formidable. The best these days.
