Review(s)
Hi there,
Let's just start by saying it was a great show. The venue where it took place was the Botanical garden in Brussels. I arrived at 5pm and Cranes were just finishing doing their soundcheck. I could hear distinctively 'Future Song' and 'Flute song' from a distance of 500 meters ! Their gig took place in a tent in the park. It was an indoor-festival with 9 bands, 3 per venue. Cranes played after the band called Simian , that I didn't know.
At 6pm Cranes had lunch in the cafeteria of Botanique, were local people and fans were sitting. After their lunch I had a little chat with Ali and she was very kind.
She told me they were able to play a 1 hours-set, which they did. That's an improvement to their previous show, that only lasted 40 minutes because of technical problems. Their new album 'Future Songs' was only available in the shops, the day before their show, so most people didn't have it. Bad timing ! But it's not Cranes' fault.
About the gig : They played mainly songs of the new album, but also songs of their previous 3 albums. They didn't play anything of 'Wings of joy', which was a bit of a shame.
I can't remember all songs they played ,nor the exact running-order, but they did play : Future song, Flute song, Adrift, Jewel, Reverie,Clear , Far away, Cloudless (?), Are you gone (?) and let go.
They didn't do any encores, which is also a shame. Ali wore a red top on a blue or black jeans.
Still, it was great.
I hope to see them again soon,
See you

here's my "review" of the Cranes in Brussels last Tuesday. Since I know
that some of you collect playlists, I tried to copy it down. However I'm
very bad at song names, so I ended up recording the intros into my mobile
to check the names at home. (Before anyone asks, the quality is really BAD
and they're only the intros until I recognized the song). Here is what I've
come up with after some 90mins of hard work:
The opener was future song, and then they played 3 or 4 songs before I
actually started. Then on with, in this order:
-jewel (this was the most difficult to recognize because I only have a few
seconds, but I'm pretty sure about it now)
-driving in the sun
-fragile
-sunrise
-everywhere
-far away
-adrift
From the list Johan sent earlier, this leaves the following unaccounted for:
Clear
Cloudless (?)
let go
Reverie
Are you gone (?)
Flute song
I'm pretty sure they only played about 4 songs between future song and
jewel though.
Ali didn't say a lot, she said "merci" after the 1st song and "thank you" a
couple of other times, and she announced *1* song (which I couldn't even
understand), but that was about it.
I think there were some 800 people in the tent at the time, perhaps some
10% in goth outfit and at least 1/3rd were real fans, you could see.
From people in the goth scene I had heard some negative comments about
their Eurorock gig last August (which I didn't attend), so I was very
curious to see them play, but this concert was so great! When they started
far away and adrift the crowd really went mad and both songs were followed
by loud applause. I realize now that I like future songs much more than I
thought I did. The Cranes still are the only band of whom I collect
everything, whether I like it or not.....
Anyway, I hope this helps and if not I've now got at least 5 Cranes cds put
in my cd changer instead of the Wumpscut and Terminal Choice that were in
there...... ;-)

I have seen the Cranes a variety of times since 1992, and have to say this
was not a good show. The sound quality was not good and the mixing downright
awfull. Ali's singing wasn't 100%, and even the instruments didn't sound
right (did anyone else get the feeling the the synth sounded like a $99
casio).
Having said all this, I woud have still enjoyed the show, were it not for
the truly obnoxious crowd that had come to see Divine Comedy. I concur that
probably about a third of the crowd was there for the Cranes, but I had to
put up with loud, talking embeciles all through the Cranes set, and I was no
more than 5 meters from the stage.
I really wish they would come back and play another show by themselves, they
deserved much better than this.
Anyway, I'm glad I got that off my chest.
I'd say about half the material was from the new album (or: it sounded new
to me, since I have not yet gotten the new album). Looking at the lists
below I can confirm that they did play: reverie, cloudless. They did not
play: Clear, Let Go. I must admit that I have my doubts about cloudless, but
I'm pretty sure. Funny how memory can fade that quickly.
By the way, Divine Comedy was not a good match for the Cranes. I'm sorry to
any fans of theirs on this list (I couldn't really see anyone liking the
two), but I was running for the exit by the time they were into their second
song. Yuck. Obviously their obnoxious fan base did not help.
