Reviews
LINDO!

I have to say that, days 2 and 3 of the Arcos de Valdevez festival were simply excellent!!! The portuguese festival had a indy/alternative atmosphere, with groups like Cranes, Fall, Dead in Vegas, Einstuzen Neubauten, pity that it was’t very publicized, (some say that it was directed for elites) but in a way, that was a good thing. Anyway... Cranes were the first major band to perform on day 2, and if we forget the technical problems that happened on 2 of the songs (if my memory serves me right, they were Rêverie and Everywhere), with the sampler/backup tape (I don’t know what to call it), whitch made Jim laugh and made Ali looked a bit ashamed... they were simply perfect!!! I read once an article on a portuguese newspaper dedicated to music (Blitz), that described Cranes like a delicated band, where we can "see" the music that they play... and the scenery that their music transmits us are fields full of green, on some occasions we can see some gothic ruins, some water... a stream, at last, we can see paradise. Well, for me those words were like a premonition for this festival, because the music was right, the scenery was close to that... and Cranes were there!!!!
During this gig, I think that Cloudless was a great entrance, really beautiful, and Adrift was, obviously, a great ending leaving our mouth water for more... Two well received musics were definitively Jewel and To Be, and the future songs are very good too, they were all very calm, but I have to say that one of them was really excellent, with a great atmosphere, which gave me chills up my spine... I really enjoyed that, and I'm longing for the new album already!!!! There were no encores because the program was very tight and they were only allowed to play for about 1 hour, despite the audience asked for more (many of them were having their first contact with Cranes music, but at the end they seemed to be enjoying themselves), the crew started to take all their instruments off the stage.
At the end of the gig, I tried to go backstage to talk to the band, but the security guy didn’t let me in, so a friend of mine asked him, since we could't go there, could he call Ali to come talk to us, and I laugh at that idea, but, 1 minute later, believe it or not, she came!?!?! I just could’t belive that she came just to talk to the fans, I have to say that she is so, but soooooo nice!!!! Anyway, I asked her about the artwork on the new album, if it would be done by Robert Coleman (I really enjoy his artwork on Cranes cds), and she said that she really wants him to do that job, but he’s sort of “an artist” (as she called him), so she wasn’t sure about that. Then she had to go...
Now... I don’t know about day 1, but on day 3, Cranes were still on the festival. Neubauten started to play, and I was just up front, when, for my surprise, Paul seated just at my feet, I could’t resist and asked him a few questions (he is very nice, like the rest of the band), like if the rumors I had heard about 2 new gigs in Portugal, still in this year, are true, and he said that some people are contacting their promotors to fit in the 2 gigs I mentioned in a future tour, which could be played at both Porto and Lisbon’s Coliseum. I also asked him about a possible realease of a tape, including all Cranes videos, and he answered that that is a bit difficult to fulfil, because of all the rights owned by Dedicated. Then he said that he enjoyed the gig they did and that he was enjoying Neubauten (he was advised by the rest of the band to see that gig, because it was really worthwhile...) in a few minutes, the rest of the group joined Paul and they all seemed to be enjoying themselves... I guess that Jim and Ali (that was taking pictures and all) were favourably impressed by the industrial/experimental sound of Neubauten!!!!!!!
The press said that the Cranes were very nice, delicated in their sound and that the band were delighted with northern portuguese gastronomy... ehehe, at least Jim seems to enjoy Portugal, because a friend of mine told me that 1 week later, Jim was still here watching another portuguese summer festival... Well... I took some pics, but unfortunately I misplaced the film on the camera (it was dark and i was nervous, because I was seeing Cranes live for the first time) and Ali posed for me and all... :-( but I still managed to get 3 pics of them. I hope they'll come back soon so I can get my photografic revenge!!!!!! :-)))))))
