Inside Essay :
Here's the story, and it isn't pretty. Yet it's one that needs to be told.
Much like former Vice President Aaron Burr, Jan Brady is a shadowy figure in American history. Her other wise pristine image became besmirched by her public feud with a more popular but arguably less substanti al rival -- her older, and very possibly cuter, sister Marcia, who played Alexander Hamilton to Jan's Burr. Jan's obvious intellectual superiority evoked the wrath of the green-eyed monster in the capricious Marcia. The gifted Jan was forced to suffer for her genius through her every waking moment, albeit not very quietly.
The parallels here are frightening. For instance, wheras Burr occupied the office of the under-appreciated, frequently belittled Vice Presidency, Jan was cast by the fates into the role of the nearly-invisible middle child. Burr served auspiciously as Attorney General of New York, and Jan excelled in math.
Their patterns of speech were even disarmingly similar. Burr once said, when speaking of his plans to rule his own kingdom in the Ohio valley, "The gods invite us to glory and fortune; it remains to be seen whether we deserve the boon." Jan echoed, when decrying the injustice of her subservience to the spiteful Marcia, "Whenever the phone rings, it's for Marcia. It's always Marcia, Marcia, MARCIA!!"
Had she lived in a nobler time, perhaps Jan could have taken a tip from Burr and settled this travesty once and for all. So what do you say, Marcia -- pistols at dawn?
Individual track listing for Cranes
5. Cranes - "Everywhere" (Dedicated/RCA) - Doubtless if Van Gogh were alive today he'd use his good ear to listen to the Cranes. Pity he'd miss out on the stereophonic effects of this dark and beautifully unfathomable group of musical impressionists. But then again, had he heard them, he might have decided to become a bass player or something, and who knows what he might have hacked off then. Youch.
