Each living with a respective divorced parent, they began collaborative songwriting in their mid-teens eventually finalizing a line-up with Mark Francombe and Matt Cope in 1988. Dosed up on contemporary noisedamage specialists Foetus, Neubaton, Joy Division and Young Gods, Cranes finally crystallized just as the nascent ultrarock 'nineties chasmed open with teeming hope for fresh string-driven stimuli. Months after rehearsing in Portsmouth's spectacular ruined Opera House (Ken Russell s location for Tommy), James' primied compositions merged utterly with Alison's matchless afflicted vocal to result in the now deleted self-released rarities Fuse (cassette only) and Self Non Self (mint LP). The ensuing explosive press uproar saw the band go straight to the cover of Melody Maker; sign to Dedicated Records; support Young Gods and Throwing Muses AND appear on Snub TV, Music Box, Transmission and The Chart Show. At present -- and as ever -- Cranes music remains a fitfully chilling orchestration of aural trauma scored through with Alison Shaw's fearful foetal keening and a brooding, dark cumulus of tremorcrash guitars. . . . fleurs du mal growing / straight through your grey matter . . ."
